Bioecology of the Mangrove Red Crab Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus) in
Mundaú/Manguaba Estuarine Lagunar Complex, Alagoas, Brazil

ABSTRACT
Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) (Brachyura, Ocypodoidea, Ucididae), known as mangrove crab, inhabits burrows in the sediment of
the mangrove forest, being appreciated in cooking and the confection of souvenir. Although its importance, the studies on its biology and fisheries
on the Northeast Brazilian Coast continues scarce. The aim of this work was to study the bioecology of U. cordatus, in the Estuarine-Lagunar
Complex Mundaú Manguaba, Alagoas, Northeast of Brazil, approaching morphometric aspects and relative growth, population structure
and reproductive cycle, and then evaluating its sustainability. The studied area suffers from a wide diversity of environmental impacts, such as
industrial and domestic sewer, deforestation, silting, property speculation and predatory fisheries. Monthly the individuals were manually
collected in the period of August/2005 to July/2006 in four stations. In laboratory, carapace width (CW), carapace length of (CL), and
humid weight (HW) were taken. The sexual ratio and the sexual proportion were calculated, and differences in the sexual proportion were
tested by the qui-square (χ²). The application of Student test ‘t’ made it possible to conclude the existence or not of statistical significant
difference between the average sizes and weights of males and females. The capture per unit effort (CPUE) was calculated by the number of
crabs collected by fishermen per hour. There were sampled a total of 752 individuals, being 372 males and 380 females. The male carapace
width ranged from 11,50mm to 79,40mm, with mean value of 47,38±9,6mm, and length ranging from 8,50mm to 54,00mm, with mean
value of 36,20±6,98mm. The female carapace width ranged from 24,65mm to 66,40mm, with mean value of 46,28±7,02mm, and length
ranging from de 19,60mm to 52,05mm, with mean value of 35,69±5,41mm. The CWxCL and CWxHW relations presented a standard
of negative allometric growth. The reproductive period of the species, based on the presence of ovigerous females, was from January to May, with
the ‘andada’ phenomenon being observed in February. The results of the sexual ratio (0,50), of sexual proportion (1:1,02) and of χ2
 (0,04)
indicated a balanced population, demonstrating not to exist statistical significant difference it the numbers of males and females. The CPUE
values ranged from 4 to 12 crabs/man/hour, with mean value of 8,05±2,47. When compared to others crabs populations already studied in
Brazilian estuaries, the analyzed individuals from CELMM were smaller, and the CPUE values were also small, which suggests the
overexploitation of the species. The influence of the environmental impacts on the population of U. cordatus is also discussed in the present
work, as well as the availability of other resources at the area. It could be concluded that the extractive activity of the mangrove crab isn’t, at
the present time, sustainable. Thus, the implementation of a management plan of this resource becomes necessary
